The Night I Won a National Title and Became and "Overnight Success"
Four years later, in March of 1985, I was in the stands "mentally preparing" once again. This time it was for a crack at the national championship. As I sat in the stands my mind turned negative. It was déjà vu all over again. I was on a downward spiral that would end with me taking home yet another 2nd place medal.
The First "Shift"
After several minutes of wallowing in negativity, I made a mental shift. I made a choice to leave the stands, to get out of the place where I couldn1t concentrate. I went to a quiet room and closed my eyes. I breathed deeply and pictured myself as a champion - but in a way that I had never done so before.
30 minutes later, when I took the mat for the finals, I was a different man. I was NOT the same person who was full of fear, self-doubt and worry. And guess what? I walked away as 3national champion.2
Now, before you start thinking that I had the entire mental process of success down at that point, think again.
Yes, I knew how to use my mind better than when I did in high school - but I was still a long way off from knowing the real success secrets that I know and use today.
From Nobody to World Champion
In December of 1997, twelve and a half years after winning a national collegiate title, I was in the stands in Beijing, China, mentally preparing for the gold medal round in the World Shuai-chiao kung fu championships. This time my barrels were fully loaded in terms of mental and physical skills. But even so, I found myself moving back and forth from images of winning the gold to dreadful thoughts of getting my ass kicked.
Once I recognized the negative emotion trying to take hold of me, I moved to another corner of the arena and did some deep breathing exercises. I inhaled positive energy and exhaled negative - and within a few minutes my mind was focused like a laser. I was clear about my purpose and 100% free of fear.

20 minutes later I accomplished the "impossible.2 I beat the Chinese and Mongolian national champion at his own game. I became the first and only American to ever win a World Shuia-chiao kung fu title in China.
How did I make the mental shift to accomplish my objective? By taking mind power techniques from the west and combining them with Chinese chi kung and relaxation teachings (my wife is from China and we have a vacation home there, on Hainan Island).
Upon my return to the U.S. in January of 1998, I began to focus on other areas of my life; areas that I had neglected while I was a competitive athlete, and without exception, every single area that I concentrated on improved.
